AP Minor Crimes Removal Request Policy
All the below criteria must be met:
- The story must be at least two years old.
- The story must be about criminal charges that have been resolved – ideally through dismissal, acquittal or expungement. The AP also will consider blocking stories about criminal cases that ended in a conviction if the case was minor
and the sentence has been entirely fulfilled. Applicants are urged to provide supporting documentation, such as an official court expungement.
- The AP must find that the ongoing harm outweighs whatever news value the story may continue to have. The AP alone will make this determination.
- The person accused cannot be someone the AP considers to be a public figure.
- The request must be made by the accused individual themselves, not by a government, corporation or organization, nor by a reputation repair firm or an attorney for the individual affected.
